Abstract

Introduction: Patients with anxiety disorders are at increased risk of self-harm or suicide. While conventional anxiolytics agents are effective, they may cause sedation, dependence or withdrawal. Therefore, natural remedies are being explored for their therapeutic potential.

Objective: To compare the anxiolytic effect of Moringa Oleifera leaf extract with alprazolam in Albino rats.

Methodology: Twenty-four male albino rats were divided into three groups: Group A received normal saline (0.9% NaCl); Group B received Moringa oleifera extract (0.25 ml/kg); and Group C received Alprazolam (0.001 mg/kg, i.p). The Elevated Plus Maze Test (EPM) and the Light and Dark Box Test were used to assess anxiolytic activity. Data were expressed as mean ± SD and analyzed using SPSS v 23, one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s HSD post hoc test was applied for multiple group comparison with p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.

Results: No mortality or adverse effects were observed during the study period. In EPM, both Alprazolam and Moringa Oleifera significantly increased the time spent and entries in the open arms compared to the control group (p=0.001, Tukey’s HSD post hoc test) with Moringa oleifera showing a greater effect. In the Light-Dark box test, both treatments significantly increased time spent and entries in the light compartment, while reducing time spent and entries in the dark compartment (p=0.001) with Moringa Oleifera exhibiting superior anxiolytic activity.

Conclusion: Moringa Oleifera extract demonstrated significant anxiolytic effects comparable to Alprazolam, with added benefits of a longer duration of action, absence of sedation and a favorable safety profile.
